According to Tobacco Induced Diseases, between 60% and 90% of people worldwide relapsed within a year of quitting smoking. One reason statistics like these are so high is because it’s incredibly difficult to have the willpower to consistently say “no.” For that reason, we’re sharing some quick and easy things to do to replace your cigarette breaks.

1. Call a Friend

When you’re quitting any habit, you need a good support system. If you’re lucky enough to have one, give your friend or family member a call to share how you’re feeling and thank them for their continued support. If you don’t have a support system yet, that’s okay – consider writing a letter to your future self or journaling instead.

2. Wash Your Car Inside and Out

If you find that doing something physical helps diminish your urge to smoke, consider cleaning your car inside and out. Make sure to declutter the backseat and truck, clean inside the cupholder, wipe down the windows, wash the tires, and, if you have the energy, wax the outside. The best part is that you’ll work through the craving while also checking something off your to-do list!

3. Do a Crossword Puzzle

If you need to keep your mind occupied, try doing a crossword puzzle! Some patients find that using pen and paper helps their hands stay busy, and others find that the convenience of an app on their phone is better. Of course, you can also opt for other games, like Boggle! or a traditional puzzle.

4. Meditate

For many patients, the urge to smoke is tied to a stressor. Whether you’re going through a lot at home or your job is demanding, it can be difficult to find an alternative that offers quick relief. Although it may take some practice, meditating is a great alternative. In addition to helping you clear your mind and calm your breath, making this a consistent habit can positively benefit your mental, emotional, and overall well-being.

5. Ride Your Bike

If you need to step away for 15 minutes or so, ride your bike! Since it’s an aerobic activity, it helps your heart, blood vessels, and lungs – all things that smoking damages. Plus, some time outside can boost your mood and increase your Vitamin D intake.

Note: If you don’t have a bike or you’re at the office, go on a walk or do a 15-minute stretch instead!
