Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

While medical insurance benefits are generally used only when you’re dealing with a serious medical emergency or illness, dental benefits are meant to be used on a regular basis. Many people don’t realize this and thus allow their benefits to expire, even though they’re designed to cover your most essential preventive treatments. It’s just one of the reasons why dental insurance providers will offer the most coverage for services like exams, cleanings, and X-rays.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

While dental plans can all vary in coverage, most of them tend to follow the same structure. For example, you’ll find many providers will cover treatments depending on whether it is preventive or restorative in nature. You’ll typically find plans broken down in the following way:

  • Preventive Care – Usually covered close to 100%
  • Minor Restorative Care – Usually covered between 70% and 80%
  • Major Restorative Care – Usually covered up to 50%
  • Cosmetic Dentistry – Not usually covered by dental insurance
