Beware of These Surprising, Cavity-Causing Foods!

When it comes to tooth decay, treats like ice cream and soda are some of the leading culprits. After all, the moment sugar interacts with the bacteria in your mouth, it begins to form an enamel-eroding acid. However, it is important to know that there are other foods and beverages that can wreak just as much havoc on your smile. With this in mind, keep reading for a few cavity-causing foods that may surprise you!

#1. Raisins

Raisins have earned the title “nature’s candy,” and rightly so! They are naturally high in sugar and come with a number of benefits, including the ability to aid your digestion and boost your iron levels. However, many patients often forget that the sugar content of raisins is often comparable to a candy bar. Plus, their sticky nature allows them to cling to the surface of your teeth, increasing your chances of tooth decay. Therefore, it’s a good idea to stick to mouth-healthy alternatives, like apples, which are naturally sweet and actually help keep your teeth clean!

#2. Saltines

Saltines are great alongside a warm bowl of soup or can stand alone if it’s all your body will allow you to keep down when you are sick. Sadly, they aren’t the best when it comes to your oral health. To start, processed carbohydrates and starches are similar to foods that are high in sugar, stimulating enamel-eroding bacteria. Additionally, the crackers become a fine powder as you chew, coating every crevice of your mouth. Since brushing away all of the food particles is no easy task, you are significantly increasing the likelihood of tooth decay. So, make sure to drink plenty of water and stick to a solid at-home oral hygiene routine.

#3. Alcoholic Beverages

From craft beers to fine wines, alcoholic beverages can play a role in the downfall of your oral health. The primary reason is that they dry out your mouth and slow down your saliva production, which allows the bacteria in your mouth to grow faster. That’s why dentists recommend keeping a glass of water within arm’s reach when you do indulge.

To keep your smile happy and healthy throughout the years, it is of the utmost importance that you view your diet as a part of your at-home oral hygiene routine. With this in mind, make sure to indulge in the above foods and beverages sparingly!
